What's the difference between IB Math AI and AA ?

IB Mathematics - Which level should you choose?

IB Math AI and IB Math AA are two different mathematics courses offered as part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. The main difference between the two courses is the focus of the material covered.

IB Math AI

IB Math AI focuses on applied math, including topics such as statistics, probability, and modeling. This course is intended for students who are interested in using math to solve real-world problems and who may be considering a career in a field that involves data analysis, such as business, engineering, or the sciences.

IB Math AA

IB Math AA, on the other hand is intended for students who are interested in the more theoretical aspects of mathematics and who may be considering a career in a field that involves advanced mathematical concepts, such as pure mathematics, computer science, or theoretical physics.

IB Math AI vs IB Math AA

Both courses are challenging and require a strong background in math, but the specific content and focus of the courses differ, so the choice of which course to take will depend on a student's interests and career goals.

Do you want to know more? Or maybe you can’t decide which path should you follow? Feel free to book a lesson with one of our tutors. All of them have been through the IB courses themselves and thus they exactly know what you’re going through.

IB Math AA Overview

Both levels require manipulation of algebraic expressions, recognition of patterns and understanding the generalisation of these patterns mathematically. Students who decide to take AA HL will develop strong algebraic skills and basic comprehension of simple proofs. Students in AA enjoy solving challenging problems.

What is the IB Math AA exam structure ?

The IB Mathematics AA exam consists of two papers at SL and three at HL. Paper 1 and 2 consist of two sections and Paper 3 consists of two small investigations. Paper 1 consists of shorter questions and calculators are not allowed thus arithmetic skills are a valuable predisposition for every AA student. Paper 2 is a calculator exam that generally consists of fewer but longer questions that require a deep understanding of topics. Most SL students find paper 2 to be more challenging, because the questions are longer and mix together a variety of the topics.

How to win IB Math AA?

A key to success is proficiency with the graphic display calculator (GDC). In addition, time management comes into play because the more time you spend on your calculator the less time you might have for the rest of the questions.

Other than time management, stress management is just as important for this exam. Failure to rest, plan and lack of sleep all may contribute to a math exam that may spiral out of control. It is always better to take a minute break and relax rather than rush and miss out on marks you would otherwise get.

One of the most common strategies for success consists of preparing by incorporating past paper questions. Even though they do not always fit your syllabus perfectly, they are invaluable in order to fully grasp the syllabus. Math HL (before the new syllabus was introduced) has had certain content that is no longer in the new syllabus, so it was adjusted and trimmed down. This means that if you do not fully comprehend the older past paper questions - there may be a reason for it, keep your head up and keep grinding!

What’s the difference between Standard Level and Higher Level?

IB Math AI Overview

Both levels require seeing mathematics in real world contexts to solve real world problems. Students who decide to take AI HL will develop strong algebraic skills as well as experience solving real world problems. Students in HL should enjoy exploring challenging problems and be comfortable using their graphic display calculator (GDC).

What is the IB Math AI exam structure ?

The IB Mathematics AI exam consists of two papers at SL and three at HL.

Paper 1 and 2 consist of two sections and Paper 3 consists of two small investigations. Paper 1 consists of shorter questions, while Paper 2 includes more long form questions and Paper 3 consists of two brief in-depth investigations into a specific area of the course. Since all papers are calculator questions, both SL and HL AI students should be very comfortable with their calculators and be able to perform all the necessary functions.

How to win IB Math AI?

Alongside proficiency with a calculator, time management is an important factor. Due to the length of the exams, students must be able to prioritize the questions in order to maximize their score.

Another way to help increase your score is to ensure that you are properly rested and ready for the exam, as this will help reduce stress and make it easier for you to stay on track and complete the exam to the best of your abilities. To prepare for the exam, there is no better way than to complete past paper questions.

Although AI Maths is a new course, the old papers are invaluable to you as a resource to check your understanding of the content and develop your problem solving skills. Math HL (before the new syllabus was introduced) has had certain content that is no longer in the new syllabus, so it was adjusted and trimmed down. This means that if you do not fully comprehend the older past paper questions - there may be a reason for it, keep your head up and keep grinding!
