Tips From Expert IB Tutors from Think Smart Tutoring

Whether you’re an IB student wanting some supplemental study materials or an IB teacher wanting to help your students practice, there are tons of IB resources out there to choose from.

Understanding IB Resources and Question Banks

1. What are the most effective IB study resources?

The most effective IB study resources are the ones that are best suited to your learning style as a student, tailored to areas in the IB subjects in which you could use the most help.

Usually, resources include a mix of textbooks, online courses, and supplementary materials like flashcards and study guides or videos.

While past exam papers are useful, they should be accessed through official IB channels or with your school’s permission to ensure copyright compliance.

Depending on the type, some resource sites offer specialized content such as interactive courses, or video tutorials, which can provide a more engaging way to understand complex topics.

Choosing the Right Resources

2. How to choose the right IB resources for my subjects?

First, it's important to figure out what your learning style is. Are you a visual learner? Maybe Youtube is a great place to start.

Beyond your style of learning, the resources that will help you ultimately depend on the subject you need help in. You’ll want the materials you’re using to thoroughly cover the exact aspects of the syllabus you would like some clarification in.

It's also beneficial to read reviews or get recommendations from past IB students or educators to ensure the quality and relevance of the resources.

It's good to experiment with different types of resources, but it's also smart to stick to your favorite ones. At the end of the day, don't spend too much time finding the perfect resources though.

A lot of time can be lost during this process, especially since most of the good IB resource providers, apart from the official IB channels, hide their materials behind high pay walls and are not entirely clear about what they include.

The good news is that while we can’t include official past IB papers, we include a lot of unofficial IB resources in our tutoring services, so if you're lucky enough to be reading this right now why not just skip the entire tedious search and book a trial lesson with a tutor?

3. What are the different types of IB resources and providers?

Different providers might focus on varied teaching methods - some may offer more in-depth theoretical knowledge, while others might specialize in exam practice and strategy.

The quality of explanations, the frequency of content updates, and the inclusion of recent exam questions can also vary, making it important to choose resources that align with your subject-specific learning needs and the latest syllabus requirements.

YouTube is an all-around great place to look for help on specific assignments such as papers or oral exams, or if you just want a visual experience like we mentioned earlier… this option is perhaps as close as you can get to a simulated tutor (one that you, unfortunately, can’t ask questions).

If you’re struggling with IB languages such as IB Spanish, watching a lot of Netflix shows in that language will most likely boost your grades a point or two just through sheer exposure (assuming you watch the show regularly).

But it’s not that straightforward. You’d benefit greatly from choosing something that's genuinely interesting to you, and make sure the language that you're trying to improve is set as the audio AND subtitles (yes, you’re allowed to alternate between English and Spanish subtitles from time to time). Try to occasionally stop and repeat what the characters are saying.

It’s also a huge bonus if you can be disciplined about something easy like keeping a very short diary in that language. Expressing yourself daily about activities that are meaningful to you can be very helpful for developing your writing skills.

Podcasts can be great in this respect if you want something that's as interesting as netflix but on the go. The downside is you don't get subtitles. They help you get very familiar with the language for your listening comprehension.

IB practice websites can give you ideas for coursework such as your IB IA or personal statements for when you're applying to university. They can provide you with alternative interpretations to the ones provided by your teacher, if you're analyzing a novel for a subject like IB English literature.

Textbooks are important for the more scientific subjects such as IB Physics or other IB subjects such as IB economics. But textbooks can be hit and miss, suffering from some minor mistakes in answer keys that can cause a lot of confusion and frustration over time. Not only that, answer keys aren't always good at explaining why the answers are right.

You can also check out the authors of your textbooks for some extra information and clarity of the definitions, you'll be surprised that some of these authors have other content that's helpful. But make sure what you're studying is on your syllabus.

For sciences like IB biology, some of the Cambridge and Oxford books can help a lot, but are not always the best. Some students have complained about how these guides are not always thorough or comprehensive enough.

For subjects such as IB Math, there exist popular services like revision village. But if you're going to pay for a premium, you might as well just get tutoring.

For a slightly higher price, you get dramatically better value.

Using IB Question Banks for Revision

4. What are IB Question Banks and how can they help in exam preparation?

IB question banks are databases of exam-style questions designed to mirror the format and challenges of actual IB exams. They allow teachers to design IB practice questions for the specific needs of their students.

They're great for understanding the types of questions asked and for learning time management skills under simulated IB exam conditions.

5. How to use IB question banks for effective revision?

To effectively use question banks, create a revision schedule that allows you to cover all topics.

Regularly practice with these banks to build familiarity with the question styles and to improve speed. It's also beneficial to review your incorrect answers to understand your mistakes and learn the correct concepts, reinforcing your knowledge and improving your accuracy over time.

IB question banks are primarily used for students to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and to create study plans accordingly - an objective you can accomplish much faster through personalized expert IB tutoring.

6. Can IB question banks improve my chances of scoring higher?

While IB question banks can definitely improve your chances of scoring higher on the IB exams, some students still need someone to explain concepts to them when their teacher is not immediately accessible.

This is why resources exist to help supplement your current understanding. Studies show that you have a better chance of mastering concepts when you’ve studied them in different formats. But when you’re not sure what works best for you, it’s easy to lose motivation.

Losing inspiration is a huge struggle in the IB.

This is where tutors can really offer you guidance, helping to reassure you about what exactly to focus on so you don't waste your time or energy trying to cover it all.

Seeking emotional support from your friends during the IB can be great, but the best academic support comes directly from experienced tutors who’ve been through the IB exactly like you have.

Availability and Accessibility of Resources

7. Where can I find IB past papers and solutions?

A good place to start is asking your teachers and classmates. Your IB teachers tend to have safe, copyright compliant access to materials and years of experience preparing IB students for IB exams, and your friends have probably done their research too - you’d be surprised how asking the right person may lead to good IB resources you didn’t know existed!

Sometimes teachers might even be reluctant to share materials until closer to exam dates, which might be a little late for students who want that extra edge.

Our honest opinion is that it’s not worth risking waiting for your teachers to finally come through with the materials right before the exams, when it’s possible too late to really improve.

We know what it’s like to be in your shoes, and while we don’t supply official IB materials, we can help alleviate some of the stress by providing you with the best unofficial resources and personalized tutoring for any subject or assignment.

All of our tutors are IB graduates and actively use their collective decades of professional experience to help you get the best results in the IB.

8. Are there any free IB resources available online?

As we mentioned before, Youtube is great for free content for visual learners.

Reddit can also provide really good links to solid IB resources, such as free templates and downloadables.

The downside of these ‘free’ resources is that they can sometimes lead to scammy promotions and malicious websites, trying to get you to provide personal information or make a purchase, in exchange for inaccurate material.

IB creators on social media can also be helpful for entertainment purposes and blowing off some steam. It can be relatable to connect over silly IB memes; they may even point you toward some decent resources.

But again, be careful with influencers as many are paid to promote materials and resources that may not be the best for your specific needs.

If you have quick questions a lot of students use ChatGPT as a quick search engine, and it can be great to give you a general answer to a question.. However GPT is a language prediction model and is not up to date, and can contain errors, so its always best to double-check the information from there if it's important.

The reality is that most of the online IB resources advertised as ‘free’ are either outdated or links to sites or services that then try to sell you a ‘premium’... in our honest opinion, it’s not even worth going down that road.

Book a trial session with an experienced tutor and get a personalized study plan that includes legitimate up to date resources in the price.

Staying Up to Date With the IB Curriculum

9. What are the latest updates in the IB curriculum?

Every year multiple IB subjects undergo a syllabus update. You definitely don’t want to be using materials from seven years ago because even though the changes from year to year may be subtle, occasionally there are huge shifts in the IB course model.

If you’re using study resources from places that are outdated you run the risk of studying for an exam that doesn’t exist anymore.

We always post the latest IB 2023 syllabus updates for IB subjects ranging from IB sciences like IB physics to IB Languages like IB Spanish.

If you feel like you could use a little extra help with improving your understanding or IB score, our IB tutors can answer your specific syllabus questions, are up to date with all of the IB syllabus changes, and work closely with current IB teachers who provide the best resources.
